Obituary

Mr. Wilmon Lorenza Tyson, Sr. of Americus, Georgia passed away Friday, November 22, 2024, at the Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, Georgia.

The funeral service will be on Monday, December 2, 2024, at 11:00 AM in the Lebanon Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia.  The burial will follow at the Lebanon Cemetery in Plains, Georgia.

The story of Wilmon Lorenza Tyson, Sr. began on June 7, 1945, in Terrell County, Georgia. Wilmon was the third of eight children born to Robert Lewis Tyson, Sr. and Katherine Blackshear Tyson, both of whom preceded him in death.

After moving to Plains, Georgia, he attended the Sumter County School System where he gained a love for automobiles. He had a long career driving big rig trucks and was known to his friends on the road by the handle, "00". He loved technology, fishing, eating strawberry ice cream, and driving on country roads - no road was ever too long.

He was also the proprietor of Tyson Body Shop for over 30 years, mastering the trades of automotive bodywork and paint, both trades he diligently taught his children.

He possessed a modest spirit that was deeply rooted in his faith, and also served as a deacon of Saint John AME Church in Plains, Georgia.

The father of nine children, he loved kids, animals, and showing off his humor. His beautiful and powerful amber eyes could surround you with comfort or irrefutably show his discontent. He was a source of great wisdom who enjoyed the simple things in life like singing, having coffee on the porch, and reminding you in conversations that "Right is right!".

On Friday, November 22, 2024, the final notes were penned in his book of life. Those left to reflect upon the pages of his life are his loving and devoted family:  his children, Wilmon Tyson, Jr., David Tyson, Gloria Niecey Tyson, Sylvia (Christopher) Powell, Tony (Kariala) Tyson, Daron (Tonya) Tyson, Stephanie Paul, Cedric Tyson, and Bradley (Brock) Tyson; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his siblings, R. L. (Eloise) Tyson, Katherine Harvey, Lucius (Annette) Tyson, Shelly (Isa Bell) Tyson, Leila Brown, Bernice Tyson, and Arthur James Tyson; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many supportive friends, including Gloria Tyson-Wilson, former wife and caregiver, and his honorary son, Keith (Pamela) Frederick.
