David Colson was born October 19, 1946, in Cordele, Georgia. He was born to his loving parents, the late Johnnie Lee and Laura Mae West Colson. He passed away on August 15, 2026.
David was educated in the public schools of Crisp County. Early in his life, he accepted Christ as his Savior and united with the Zion Hope Baptist Church.
He was a hardworking man who took great pride in providing for his family. He worked at Ford Motor Company before eventually becoming an entrepreneur and owning an interstate trucking company. A self-taught truck driver, David learned the old-school ways of reading maps and navigating by directions long before modern technology made traveling easier. He truly loved being behind the wheel of his truck and took great pride in his ability to get wherever he needed to go.
David had many passions and interests throughout his life. He enjoyed cowboy movies, music, all sports, horse racing, and especially following Michael Jackson. He worked at Northfield Racino and had a love for horse racing. He also had a particular appreciation for Lincolns and enjoyed cooking, especially good soul food—and his cornbread was a favorite.
David was known for always smelling good and looking good. He had a charismatic personality. He was very talkative, knowledgeable, and always had something to say. David loved sharing what he knew and was never shy about offering a story, an opinion, or a lesson he felt someone needed to hear. He could talk for hours about the things he loved, especially his favorite NFL team, the Cleveland Browns, and his favorite NBA player, LeBron James.
Above all, David will be remembered for his strong personality, hard-working spirit, sense of humor, love of conversation, and the many stories and lessons he shared with those around him.
Along with his parents, David is preceded in death by his brothers, Johnny B. Dennis and Walter Dennis and his in-laws, James M. Jones, Dorothy Colson, and Kenneth Grace.
David was the beloved father of Michelle Kelly of Las Vegas, Nevada, Veronica “Denise” Jarrells (Gene) of Atlanta, Georgia, Michelle “Yvette” Ford of Warner Robins, Georgia, Laura Colson of Cleveland, Ohio, Lonnie Colson of Ohio, James Clark (Nicole) of Cleveland, Ohio, and Stacey Robinson of Ohio; a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren; he was a dear brother to Gracie Dennis-Jones of Kathleen, Georgia, Robert Dennis (Arnetta) of Akron, Ohio, Eddie C. Dennis (China Bell) of Jacksonville, Florida, Willie Colson of Atlanta, Georgia, Baserine Colson-Grace of Perry, Georgia, and Bennie L. Colson (Joyce) of Perry, Georgia; he was a beloved uncle, great uncle, cousin, and friend to many and a special friend to Rebecca Grace and many other loved ones who will miss him dearly.
