Mother Elberta Ashmon Harris of Perry, Georgia, died Saturday, July 4, 2026, in Largo, Maryland.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 10:00 AM in the sanctuary of the Magnolia Baptist Church in Montezuma, Georgia. The burial will follow at the Champ Waters Cemetery in Montezuma, Georgia.

Mother Elberta Ashmon Harris was born on February 16, 1936, in the warm and welcoming community of Macon County, GA. She was the cherished daughter of Willie Ashmon, Sr. and Florence Haugabrook Ashmon, who instilled in her a love for education and community service.

Elberta's early education took place at the Historical Flint River Farm School and continued through the public school system. Her pursuit of knowledge led her to Fort Valley State College, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Education. Elberta's commitment to education did not stop there; she furthered her studies at the University of Georgia, where she obtained a Master's in Education. Her dedication to learning and teaching left a lasting impact on countless students.

A devoted member of her faith communities, Elberta was actively involved in the Magnolia Baptist Church in Montezuma, GA, and the Greater Allen AME Church in Dayton, OH. Her spiritual life was a source of strength and joy, and she found great pleasure in praising the Lord and attending church services.

Elberta was also a proud member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., where she contributed to the sorority's mission of enhancing the quality of life for women and their families in the U.S. and globally.

Elberta had a variety of interests that brought her immense joy. She loved shopping, particularly for purses, and was a dedicated family woman who cherished spending time with her daughter and grandsons. Traveling and exercising were among her favorite activities, and she was a constant presence at her grandsons' sporting events, often cheering them on with her enthusiastic cry, "GO BIG Team!" She even enjoyed watching whatever her grandsons were watching on television, embracing their interests with open arms.

Elberta transitioned peacefully on Saturday, July 4, 2026. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Wylene Amadi, Delores Peterson, Barbaita Ashmon, and Bertha Ashmon.

Elberta Ashmon Harris's life was a testament to the power of love, education, and faith. Her spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her memory and legacy of love and warmth live on through her loving and devoted daughter, Segrid J. Harris of Perry, GA; her beloved grandsons, Robert James Wright of Perry, GA, and Samuel Henderson Wright of Freeport, FL; her sisters, Lillie Ruth Ambles (Eddie) and Victoria Rice of Snellville, GA; Carolyn Tharpe (Richard) of Lawrenceville, GA; Mamie Mills of Kennesaw, GA; and Sonya M. Williams of Marion, OH; her brothers, Willie Joe Larry Freddie Ashmon and Calvin Ashmon of Montezuma, GA; Shade Ashmon (Hattie) of Fredericksburg, VA, Ted Roosevelt Ashmon of Marion, OH, Willie H. Ashmon, Nathaniel Ashmon, Willie C. Ashmon, Adolphus "Sonny" West (Elizabeth) of Miami, FL, James Ashmon of Atlanta, GA, her uncle, Joseph Haugabrook (JoAnn) of Rockmart, GA; her sisters-in-law, Geraldine Ashmon, Elizabeth West, and Nettie Ashmon; her brothers-in-law, Richard Thorpe and Eddie Ambles; a very devoted cousin, Ruben Ashmon of Washington, DC; her extended family friends, Janice Davis and Dr. Wanda West of Macon, GA, and Dr. Robert & Mrs. Marsha Angrish of Americus, GA.
