Mrs. Mattie Mae Johnson Russell of 568 US Highway 280, West, Americus, Georgia died Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at Brightmoor Hospice in Griffin, Georgia.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, March 9, 2024 at 10:00 AM in the sanctuary of the Magnolia Bay Baptist Church in Preston, Georgia. The burial will follow in the churchyard cemetery.
A loving and caring soul was welcomed to this world on April 17, 1949 when our beloved Mattie Mae Johnson Russell was welcomed to this world. She was born to Joe Johnson and Mattie Ruth Burton Brown in Americus, Georgia.
She received her education from the public school system and attended Lee County Training School.
A believer in Jesus Christ, she accepted him as her Savior early in life. She was a faithful member of the Magnolia Bay Baptist Church where she served as a Deaconess and member of the Kitchen committee. An avid fundraiser for the church, she would willingly serve in whatever capacity she was needed.
Her culinary skills allowed her to cater many events in the Sumter and neighboring counties. She was a wonderful homemaker who enjoyed fishing and spending time with her family.
On Wednesday, February 28, 2024, she was set free from the cares of this life. Her beloved husband, Deacon Bonny Henry Russell, preceded her in death on August 21, 2020. She is also preceded in death by her siblings: Clara Mae Brown Wright, Bernice Brown, Pearly Mae Brown Cody, Viola Williams, Eddie Mae Johnson, Gloria Dean Johnson, Joyce Ann Johnson, Steve Lorenzo Johnson and Lizzie Mae Johnson.
Precious memories of her life will be cherished by her loving and devoted children, Tirrell Shawn Johnson of Riverdale, Georgia, Lakeshia Nicole Russell of South Fulton, Georgia and Bonny Bondale Russell of Americus, Georgia; her grandchildren, Terrence Johnson and Tysene Johnson; her sisters, Yvette Dunning and Cora Brown of Americus, Georgia, Estella Clintscale of Columbus, Georgia, Suzette Calhoun of Warner Robins, Georgia, Geneva Brown and Bonnie K. Johnson of Americus, Georgia, Diane Johnson of Smithville, Georgia, Stephanie Johnson and Sabrina Johnson of Albany, Georgia; her brothers, William Brown, Jr. of Ft. Pierce, Florida, Otis Brown of Americus, Georgia, James Brown of Smithville, Georgia, Calvin Brown of Leesburg, Georgia, Larry B. Johnson and Timothy Lee Johnson of Smithville, Georgia; a host of nieces and nephews, to include, Keshawn Campbel of Preston, Georgia and Fredrick Daniel of Americus, Georgia; a host of cousins, to include, Duke Jowers of Rex, Georgia, Albert Adams and Robert Adams of Smithville, Georgia and Anthony & Theresa Williams of Americus, Georgia; a host of other relatives, to include her cousins-in-law, Odessa & Ethan Times of Buena Vista, Georgia, Rudolph & Maude Russell of Fitzgerald, Georgia, and Dessie Gene Purdue of Atlanta, Georgia; a host of other relatives and many sorrowing friends, to include her special friends, Annette & Ollie Williams of Columbus, Georgia and Stephanie Lockett Trice of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
