Mrs. Mattie Mae Mathis Johnson better known "Sister Girl" of 125 Edgewood Drive, Cordele, Georgia died Sunday, June 5, 2022 at the Crisp Regional Hospital in Cordele, Georgia.

The funeral service will be held Sunday, June 12, 2022 at 12:00 Noon at the A. S. Clark Auditorium on the M. D. Whitest Medical Institute Campus in Cordele, Georgia.  The burial will follow at the Bethel Cemetery in Cordele, Georgia.  Everyone in attendance is asked to please wear a mask and to practice social distancing.

Mrs. Mattie Mae Mathis Johnson was born on the 1st day of November in the year of 1940.  "Sister Girl," as she was affectionately called by family and friends, was born to Mr. Amos "Nick" Mathis, Sr. and Mrs. Rosa Lee Fields  Dexter.

She received her education in the public schools of Lee County and Crisp County.

Early in life she accepted Christ as Lord and united with the Greater Morris Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church in Cordele, Georgia.  As a member of Greater Morris, she served as a member of the Gospel Choir and The Voices of Tabernacle.

She enjoyed the simple things of life which included every minute she had with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Her days were spent watching The Young and the Restless and Family Feud. Whether she was out and about or if someone was going to the store, she had to have a Burger King cheeseburger, Cheese Puffs, and chocolate milk.  She was known for her love of "sweets," which included a good sweet potato pie, peppermint candy, and honey buns.

Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt was granted rest from the toils of this life on Sunday, June 5, 2022.  While we will forever miss the joy and beauty of her smile and her many comical gestures and saying, we find comfort in knowing that she is at peace.  Along with her parents, her husband, Mr. Wilbert Lee Johnson, her daughters, Edith and Wanda Faye, her grandsons, Mr. Jonathan Johnson and Mr. Michael C. West, and her siblings, Mrs. Martha "Bay" Sanders and  Mr. Henry Dexter each precede her in death.  She is also preceded by her sons-in-law, Mr. Marcus Neal Porter and Mr. Kenneth B. Jackson, Sr.

Her journey will be cherished by her loving and devoted children, Ms. Vera Mathis, Mrs. Rosalind Johnson Porter, Mrs. Teresa (Keith) Wright, Ms. Sandre Johnson, Mr. Fredrick Johnson, Mrs. Shonda Harris Jackson, and Mrs. Marilyn (Albert) Dean all of Cordele, Georgia; 25 loving grandchildren; 55 great grandchildren; her godchildren, Mr. Brandon Jackson of Cordele, Georgia and Ms. Lavoris King of Vienna, Georgia; a loving sister, Mrs. Patsy (Jim) Jackson of Cordele, Georgia; her caring brothers, Judge, Ret. Chief Norman F. (Dr. Gwendolyn) Dexter, Sr. of Vienna, Georgia, Mr. Joe Louis (Beverly) Dexter of Sumter, South Carolina, Deacon Arthur L. (Calandra) Parker of Cordele, Georgia, and Mr. Amos Mathis, Jr. of Valdosta, Georgia; her god sister, Mrs. Martha A. Cross of Cordele, Georgia; a host of nieces and nephews; a multitude of cousins, other relatives and many sorrowing friends, to include her special friends, Mother Caldon Wallace of Vienna, Georgia, Mrs. Willie Mae Dexter of Cordele, Georgia, Mother Adeline Lofton of Arabi, Georgia, and Mrs. Julia Walker of Cordele, Georgia.
