Obituary

Mr. John Mathis Tolbert, Jr. of 624 East 3rd Avenue, Cordele, Georgia died Monday, March 25, 2024 at the Piedmont Macon Medical Hospital in Macon, Georgia.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, March 30, 2024 at 2:00 PM in the sanctuary of the Greater Morris Tabernacle Baptist Church in Cordele, Georgia.  The burial will follow at the Bethel Cemetery in Cordele, Georgia.

Mr. John Mathis Tolbert, Jr., more affectionately known to his family and friend as "June" was born July 31, 1948.  He was born to the late Mr. John M. Tolbert, Sr. and the late Mother  Willie Eva Buckle Tolbert in Cordele, Crisp County, Georgia.

He was educated in the public schools of Crisp County where he attended the A. S. Clark High School.

"June" accepted the Lord, Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and became a member of the Greater Morris Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church. A faithful member of the Brotherhood Ministry and Male Choir, he enjoyed attending church and fellowshipping with his church family.

For many years he was employed as a Forklift Operator at   Golden Peanut Company. After retiring, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.  He also enjoyed fishing and listening to music.

On Monday, March 25, 2024, he peacefully transitioned from the cares of this life to a life free of sickness and pain.  Along with his parents, his wife, Mrs. Matty Lou Simmons Tolbert preceded him in death on November 24, 2016. His siblings, Mrs. Minnie T. Johnson, Ms. Lucy Mae Tolbert, Mrs. Linda J. Perry, and Mr. Johnnie J. Tolbert, Sr., also precede him in death.

His life's journey will be remembered by his loving daughter, Ms. Deborah Mathis of Vienna, Georgia; his grandchildren, Mr. Travis (Cotrina) Mathis and Mr. Marcus Mathis of Vienna,  Georgia; five great grandchildren; a loving sister, Mrs. Estelle T. Grant of Savannah, Georgia; his sister-in-law, Mrs. Juanita M. Tolbert of Cordele, Georgia; his aunts, Mrs. Theron Jones and Mrs. Kathleen W. Tolbert of Cordele, Georgia; his uncle, Mr.  David Lee Harrington of Buffalo, New York; his special nieces and nephew, Deacon Donna (Sharon) Tolbert, Mrs. Marion Spivey, and Mrs. Debra (Emmett) Graham of Cordele, Georgia;  his nieces and nephews, Evangelist Juanita (Rex) Edwards of  Savannah, Georgia, Mrs. Regina (Lonnie) Hall of Vienna, Georgia, Mr. Jesse (Rolanda) Tolbert of Cordele, Georgia, Mr. Johnnie (Audry) Tolbert of Locus Grove, Georgia, and Mr.   Marcus Tolbert, Sr. of Cordele, Georgia; a host of cousins, other relatives and many sorrowing friends.
