Mr. George Wright, Sr. of 246 Pryor Cobb Road, Cobb, Georgia, died Friday, March 13, 2026, at the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at 2:00 PM in the chapel of the J. W. Williams Funeral Home in Cordele, Georgia.  The burial will follow at the Jackson Grove Church Cemetery in Desoto, Georgia.

Everyone entering the funeral home for visitations or services is required to wear a mask and maintain social distancing.  A mask must be worn throughout the stay.  You must supply your mask.

Mr. George Wright Sr., infamously known as Big George, was born on August 16, 1936, in Lee County, Georgia, to Mr. Flate and Reather (Hubbard) Wright. He was the third oldest of 11 children: Donald Ware (deceased) (Mary Alice), Juanita Foster (deceased), Floyd Wright (deceased) (Joann), Arthur Wright (Virginia), Bobbie Cannon (deceased) (Cole), Reather Miller (Reginald), Flate Wright, Ruby Jean Wright (deceased) (Bobbie), Hubert West (Gloria Jean), and Mary Ann Thomas (Harrison).

George met his beloved wife, Gladys Crawford. They eventually jumped the broom in 1962 in Americus, Georgia. The two endured life, love, disappointment, and struggle during those 64 years, yet they made it. In spite of their trials and tribulations, they managed to raise seven children, watching each of them grow into adulthood.

As a lifelong farmer, he built his career through hard work, determination, and knowledge gained from experience rather than formal education. The land, his family, and his community served as both his livelihood and his classroom, where he learned lessons of labor, loss, happiness, and  survival. Big George was no stranger to backbreaking work under the heat of the Georgia sun. Beneath its sweltering rays, he mastered how to grow his own garden and process meats to ensure his family always had food to eat.

Big George lived unapologetically in the moment, according to his own rules every day. He worked relentlessly, played hard with friends—often meeting them on Monday nights at the Bookstore—and ensured his family remained connected. Through dedication and perseverance, he created a life defined by honest work and quiet pride in what he built with his own hands.

George departed this life on March 13, 2026. He is survived by five children: Duane (Patricia) Crawford of DeSoto, GA; Marcella Jefferson (Keith Mimbs) of Albany, GA; Keith (Teresa) Wright of Cordele, GA; Vernica (David) Wright-Curry of Acworth, GA; and Adrienne (Troy) Wright-Williams of Stafford, VA. George Wright Jr. and Lamar Wright preceded him in death. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A special debt of gratitude is extended to his cousin Charles Heard and  lifelong friends Raymond Bullard, Arthur Walker, and Ed Hayes, as well as brothers-in-law Fred and James Crawford—and to everyone who shared a relationship with Big G.

He will be remembered as a man of deep integrity, steady strength, and quiet generosity. Big George was connected to many people, each holding their own memories with him. Hold on to the memories you shared with Big George. Let them be an inspiration and a light on your path during dark days, joyful days, and throughout life's journey. May he be a constant     reminder of living life to the fullest—out loud and in color.

Throughout his life, he was a constant source of support and encouragement to those around him, always willing to listen, guide, and lend a helping hand. Family was at the center of his world, and he expressed his love through his presence, his wisdom, and the values he passed on to each generation. His passion for family and the example he set will continue to inspire all who knew him.

Make no mistake—Big George was all of those things, but he was always the boss. He was direct, and he always had an opinion to offer, whether you wanted it or not.

In closing, Big George—a man, however imperfect he may have been—stood firm and knew who he was. His basic premise was simple: you could take me or leave me.
