Deacon Preston Holmes, Jr. of 170 Pate Avenue, Ashburn, Georgia passed away Monday, December 30, 2024, at his residence.

The funeral service will be held Monday, January 6, 2025, at 11:00 AM in the sanctuary of the Friendship Baptist Church in Ashburn, Georgia.  The burial will follow at Westview Memorial Gardens in Ashburn, Georgia.

Born on a summer day, July 16, 1923, in Turner County, Georgia, Deacon Preston Holmes, Jr. began his journey through life, deeply rooted in faith and family. Son to John Leonard Holmes and Susan Hayes Holmes, he grew up in a loving household that instilled in him the values that would guide him throughout his life.

Preston Holmes, Jr. was nurtured and educated in the public school system of Turner County, where he laid the foundation for a life of dedication and service. His early years were marked by a commitment to learning and personal growth, which he carried with him into adulthood.

A steadfast believer in Jesus, Deacon Holmes dedicated much of his life to the Friendship Baptist Church in the Zip Community of Ashburn, Georgia. His devotion and commitment earned him the esteemed position of deacon, where he served faithfully for many years. His community involvement extended beyond the church as he was also a proud member of the Franklin Masonic Lodge #210.

Outside of his service, he found joy in farming, fishing, and cooking. These hobbies not only brought him personal fulfillment but also allowed him to connect with family and friends, creating cherished memories that would last a lifetime.

Deacon Preston Holmes, Jr. shared a profound love with his wife, Willie Delphia Nash Holmes, until her passing. Together, they created a loving family, whom he cherished deeply. He was preceded in death by his children Harry Holmes, Leon Holmes, and Sharon Holmes Lewis, as well as his siblings Eudora Byrd, Mamie Byrd, Richard Holmes, Albert Holmes, and Dooly Holmes.

Preston Holmes, Jr. touched the lives of many with his unwavering faith, love for his family, and commitment to his community. His life is a testament to the power of love and the impact of a life well-lived. As we remember him, we celebrate the legacy he leaves behind and the countless lives he enriched throughout his journey.

On December 30, 2024, at the remarkable age of 101, Preston answered the Master's call, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and service. His life is celebrated by his loving and devoted children: Patricia Horne, Edith Holmes Wilson (Leroy) of Ashburn, Georgia, John Holmes (Marshanda) of Ashburn, Georgia, and Gerald Holmes (Dorothy) of Fort Bragg, North Carolina; 18 loving grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren; a loving sister, Carrie Spears of Atlanta, Georgia; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many sorrowing friends.
