Obituary

Mrs. Alberta Mercer Jacobs of Ellenwood, Georgia died Thursday, March 10, 2022 at her residence.

The graveside funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 16, 2022 at 12:00 Noon at the Council Cemetery in Leslie, Georgia.  Everyone in attendance is asked to please wear a mask and to practice social distancing.

Alberta Mercer Jacobs, best known as "Sweetie" to her loved ones, left us peacefully in her home on March 10, 2022.  She was born on June 27, 1946 in Leslie, Georgia.  She was one of ten children born to the union of Lillie Mae and Deacon D. C. Mercer.

Alberta graduated from Sumter County High School.  As a young woman, she married the love of her life Lester Jacobs, and moved to New York City.  Tragically widowed at an early age, she persevered to find her footing with a career in a Wall Street investment firm as a bookkeeper.

She made her way back to Georgia to be closer to her family, and she began to serve the elderly as a Supervisory Dietician in a nursing facility.  Her true talent and love has always been cooking.  Her final career was as a Food Service Professional at Harmony Leland Elementary School in Mableton, Georgia where she worked for several years.

She cherished the children so much that she also worked in the afterschool program, after working her daily shift serving meals to both students and staff.  She was known for her wonderful cooking, particularly that specially seasoned chicken and sweet tea.  Her dedication earned her the honor of School Professional of the Year.  Her cooking talent also garnered her the opportunity to serve athletes and international media at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

She loved her Atlanta Hawks and especially her Atlanta Braves who finally won it all.

Alberta is preceded in death by her sister Annie Mercer James and her brothers Lonnie C. Mercer, Freddie Lee Mercer, Eddie James Mercer, Jessie James Mercer, and Emory Charles Mercer.

Alberta is survived by one brother Deacon Johnny D. Mercer, Sr. of Americus, Georgia and two sisters, Ernestine Cooper of Atlanta, Georgia and Sarah J. Mercer of Boca Raton, Florida; two daughters, Andromeda Jacobs-Long (Neal) and Cassandra Jones (Mark) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, former co-workers and many friends who are left to cherish memories.
